Getting Started

How do I sign up?
Book a demo via the 'Book a Demo' button. After the demo, you'll get a signed quote and onboarding kickoff. Existing beta users can sign into the webapp directly at b.legal/signin.
Do I need to download anything to start?
No. The webapp runs in any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge — with full time tracking, matter management, billing, and trust accounting. The native macOS and iOS apps add screen-capture time inference and offline-first performance.
How long does onboarding take?
Most solo practices are running in under three hours. We handle the data migration, practice-area task template setup, and your first trust reconciliation in one working session. Firms migrating from another practice-management tool or from spreadsheets typically take 1–2 business days.
Can I import my existing data?
Yes. Trust records import directly from CSV and JSON, and we migrate the rest — matters, clients, contacts, time — for you as part of onboarding. We never charge extra for migration.

Privacy & Security

Where is my data stored?
Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore (US region), encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest by Google Cloud's default encryption. Local SwiftData copies on your Mac and iPhone stay on-device, with AES-GCM encrypted local backups on macOS whose key lives in your Keychain.
Is B.Legal HIPAA-compliant?
No. We are not a covered entity and do not currently offer a BAA (Business Associate Agreement). If your matters involve protected health information, evaluate whether B.Legal's safeguards meet your obligations before storing PHI.
Is my AI data sent to third parties?
By default, yes — AI runs in the cloud (Anthropic Claude) unless you change it. On macOS you can switch the backend to a local Ollama model in Settings, and then nothing leaves your Mac. Ollama isn't available in the web app or on iPhone/iPad, so those always use cloud AI. Either way, Anthropic's commercial API terms do not allow your data to be used for model training.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep your data and your access. Cancelling drops the firm off the paid tier — it does not lock you out — so there is no countdown to export against. The only thing that stops is the B.Legal-hosted AI. You can export everything from the macOS app at any time: JSON or CSV for all records, plus a PDF report. Export is not available yet in the iOS or web apps. No lock-in clauses in our terms. We do not automatically delete anything after cancellation; if you want your data permanently removed, ask us and we will do it.
Do you support SSO?
No SAML/enterprise SSO today. Accounts sign in with email and password through Firebase Authentication, and Google sign-in is available on the webapp. The native apps support biometric unlock (Touch ID on macOS, Face ID on iOS).

Trust Accounting & Compliance

How does B.Legal handle IOLTA requirements?
The trust ledger enforces per-client and per-matter balances, blocks withdrawals that would overdraw a client's funds, writes every transaction to an append-only audit log enforced by server-side security rules, and runs three-way reconciliations with saved records. Built around NY IOLA practice — confirm your own state's trust accounting rules with your state bar.
Does B.Legal handle three-way reconciliation?
Yes. Enter your statement date and bank balance; B.Legal compares (1) bank balance, (2) book balance, and (3) the sum of client ledger balances, itemizes any discrepancies, and saves the reconciliation record with who ran it and when. The reconciliation report is exportable.
Can audit log entries be changed?
No. The audit log is append-only, enforced by server-side security rules: entries can be created but never updated or deleted. Ledger corrections are made as new offsetting entries, so the history is never rewritten.
Can I export records for a state bar audit?
Yes. The full trust transaction history exports to JSON, CSV, or PDF, and every saved reconciliation report can be exported — the records a state bar grievance or disciplinary committee asks for first.

AI Features

Which AI models does B.Legal support?
Cloud: Anthropic Claude — the default, using B.Legal's hosted access or your own API key. Local (macOS only): Ollama, running the mistral model against a server URL you can point at any Ollama-compatible install in Settings.
Can I disable AI features entirely?
AI features are optional — if you don't connect Gmail scanning, enable screen capture, or open the assistant, no AI runs. There is no single firm-wide 'AI: off' switch today. The backend is your choice per device: cloud by default, or a local Ollama model on macOS, and every AI suggestion requires attorney review before it becomes a time entry, draft, or narrative.
How accurate are the billing narratives?
In our own beta use at B.Legal LLC, the large majority of AI-generated billing narratives are accepted with little or no editing — and every generation is reviewed by an attorney before it is saved.
Does AI work offline?
Yes, if you switch the macOS app to the local Ollama backend — it works with zero network connectivity. The default cloud backend requires internet.

Platforms & Integrations

Which platforms are supported?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, iOS/iPadOS 17 or later, and any modern web browser. The native apps are free with your subscription; the webapp is the default entry point.
What integrations are included?
Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive), Zoom (meetings, phone calls, and voicemails), iMessage (macOS only), and LawPay for online invoice payments with automatic reconciliation. For AI, Anthropic Claude in the cloud, or an optional local Ollama backend on macOS.
Can I use B.Legal without Google?
Yes — matters, time, billing, and trust accounting all work without any Google account. The email capture, calendar sync, and document backup integrations are built on Gmail, Google Calendar, and Drive, so without Google you enter that data manually.
Is there a public API?
No — there is no public API today. Your data isn't locked in: export to CSV and JSON (PDF for trust records) at any time.

Billing & Contracts

Do you offer annual billing?
Yes. Solo and Firm are available monthly with no long-term commitment, or annually at 5% off twelve months of the monthly price — Solo is $1,128.60/year and Firm is $1,014.60 per user/year. Big Law is billed annually.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — a 30-day free trial after your demo. No credit card required. Full feature access during trial.
What's your refund policy?
30-day money-back guarantee from first payment. No questions asked.
Do you offer non-profit or legal-aid pricing?
Yes. 40% discount for 501(c)(3) legal aid organizations and pro bono practices. Contact sales with proof of status.
